Memorial Weekend kicks off the "100 Deadly Days of Summer" across the state of South Carolina.

South Carolina Highway Patrol and other law enforcement typically see more traffic accidents and deaths between Memorial Weekend and Labor Day Weekend compared to the entire year.

Authorities say it is challenging to reduce these numbers when drivers are not following basic traffic laws and courtesy. They are distracted, in a hurry, and at times, simply reckless.

This year alone, there have been 389 traffic deaths across the state.

Officers believe this time frame is more deadly because there are more visitors coming into the state, South Carolinians are traveling more for vacations, drinking and driving incidents increase, more motorcycles are on the roads and more young drivers are driving since they are out of school.

Law enforcement agencies are hoping to rename this time frame the "100 Fun Days of Summer" but they need drivers to make an effort to drive safely and be aware of their surroundings.
