First Responders are people who put their lives on the line for others every day. These people include police officers, fire fighters, EMS personnel and many more.
Often times these people encounter horrific events like death, serious injuries, and other traumatic experiences. Much like some of our men and women in the military who deal with the effects of major emotional and psychological trauma, first responders are being diagnosed with PTSD- Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
While military personnel may have access to treatment for their PTSD, first responders do not have treatment covered under South Carolina's Worker's Compensation.
Law makers and first responders are working to get language changed in worker's compensation law to include PTSD treatment for those affected on the job.
