Runners Rally for Local Children
Conway, SC- On Saturday, January 5, 2013, sixty runners gathered at the Marina Park for the first annual Derrick Law Firm Run for the Children 5K.
While it was a chilly 28 degrees, participants soon warmed up after traveling the scenic route coursed throughout downtown Conway. One runner commented, “I think we found every hill in Conway, SC this morning! That was tough.”
Runners Caroline Cann and Andrew Wentzel, blew away the competition at the race and proudly accepted their overall female and male first place awards. “We were surprised at how many excellent runners showed up. Although walkers were welcome to participate in the race, several runners really shocked us with their speed,” said Race Director, Holly Littles.
Participants in the race varied from the youngest at age eleven to the oldest at seventy-nine years old. Some walked with friends and family while others competed for the awards. Mother and daughter team, Betty Jordan and Nora Godbolt used the Run for the Children 5K to exercise and spend time together. “This was our first race, and I really enjoyed it! I look forward to doing it again next year,” said Godbolt. All the participants however, were there to support the Children’s Mentoring Program of Horry County.
Attorney Dirk Derrick, of Derrick Law Firm Injury Lawyers, handed out awards to the winners and thanked everyone for their support. “I think the race went well for our first time and we appreciate all the support from participants and the volunteers. All the money from the
registration fees will go directly to the Children’s Mentoring Program, and we hope to see this race grow in the future.”
