Greenville Health System recently settled with a family who is grieving the loss of 59-year-old Ella Mae Mattison.
In September 2013, Mattison was admitted to Greenville Memorial Hospital with coronary artery disease and scheduled for a bypass surgery. She began to have complications from an infection in March 2014 and passed away in June 2014.
Fifteen total patients were affected by the infection and four passed away.
The lawsuit against Greenville Health Systems says that the employees were negligent in their practices which caused the deaths of the four patients.
GHS denies all liability but stated, "We can say that we have remained committed to helping patients and families affected by this rare infection. Despite a three-month-long investigation by GHS, state and federal officials, no specific process or piece of equipment was shown to have triggered the outbreak. GHS has since adopted new water quality measures that go well beyond state and federal regulations. We are proud of the work we do at GHS, which has one of the strongest infection prevention and detection programs in the state, and pledge to continue serving the healthcare needs of our community.
