The South Carolina Highway Patrol reports that 20-year-old Evelyn Freeman has been charged with felony DUI after a fatal car accident on I-26 in Charleston early Wednesday morning. Freeman was heading west on I-26 near Ashley Phosphate when her 2003 Ford Expedition hit the median. The car crossed all four lanes of traffic and crashed into the ditch off the right side of the interstate.

The passenger in the car, 28-year-old Terral Freeman, was thrown from the vehicle and hit by oncoming traffic. He died from his injuries.

According to Lance Cpl. Bob Beres, Freeman was under the influence at the time of the accident. Another driver had reported her for reckless driving shortly before the accident.

The accident is still under investigation, but Freeman has been charged with felony DUI.
