A new license plate that reads "I BELIEVE" might soon be available to S.C. drivers, nine months after it was barred by a federal judge.
The plate, which reads http://www.IBELIEVEsc.net, is under review by the S.C. Department of Motor Vehicles. The federal court had originally banned South Carolina from making legislatively sanctioned plates with a religious message. But the plate, designed by a non-profit group of the same name, is legal, says Attorney General Henry McMaster.
The group applied for the plates in February. Private groups are allowed to create specialty plates under state law.
Americans United for Separation of Church and State sued to stop production of the plates, which feature a cross and stained glass window.
