St. Matthew's Police Chief Capers Wannamaker died Saturday afternoon after wrecking his car on Burke Road. South Carolina Highway Patrol says that Chief Wannamaker was driving down Burke Road when he skidded into a ditch area and then collided with a tree. Officials say that he was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the accident.

Investigations into the accident remain active as the town mourns the loss.
