Horry County Police Awarded for DUI Efforts

The South Carolina Department of Public Safety recognized law enforcement officers and agencies, several in the Grand Strand and Pee Dee area for their increased DUI efforts this past year.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Network Award went to 15th Judicial Circuit which is composed of Georgetown and Horry County.

Last year, Troopers arrested approximately 2,700 individuals for DUI. This is an increase of 30% from last year. While DUI has always been a problem, South Carolina troops have become more focused on addressing the problem. South Carolina is second in the nation in alcohol related fatalities according to the highway patrol.

Over the past couple weekends, a DUI blitz has taken place, focusing on downtown areas and exit roadways in Columbia, Charleston and Greenville. Officers look for any type of traffic violation and make contact with drivers. The possibility of DUI goes up the later into the morning it gets. Nearly 100 DUI arrests have been made.
