Jacob Oaks, 19, was a former Southside Christian School baseball player who most recently was a student at the College of Charleston. Oaks had been signed to play baseball for the 2016 Recruiting Class at CofC.

On his way home to study for finals, Oaks stopped for a stranded driver on the side of I-385 in Laurens County around 1am. While still seated in his car with his seat belt on, a tractor trailer hit Oaks and the stranded car. Oaks died on impact.

The driver of the 18-wheeler was taken to Greenville Memorial Hospital but injuries are unknown at this time.

Past teachers and coaches of Jacob all said it was in his nature to serve others and he loved to give back to the school when he could. They said it was a "a beautiful irony that Jacob’s last moments were serving someone else."
