Cribs recalled over suffocation risk

Posted on Apr 29, 2010

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a recall of all Simplicity full-sized cribs with tubular metal mattress-support frames after an infect suffocated after becoming trapped between the mattress and the crib frame. There is also a risk that the crib could collapse, also causing injury to infants. The recall includes both fixed-side and drop-side cribs.

The CPSC received one report of infant death associated with these cribs. CPSC is aware of 13 additional incidents involving the recalled cribs, including one child entrapment that did not result in injury and one child who suffered minor cuts when his mattress collapsed causing him to fall out of his crib.

Crib owners are told not to attempt to fix these cribs but to immediately stop use and find a safer alternative sleeping environment for their children.

The recalled cribs were sold at Walmart, Target, Babies R Us and other similar stores nationwide. Consumers can contact the store where the crib was purchased to receive a refund.
