The SC Highway Patrol says that 1 person was killed in an auto accident early Tuesday morning on I-26 westbound near Summerville. The accident happened around 4:45 a.m. near mile marker 197 and Sheep Island Road when a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee that was traveling west went off the left side of the road, overcorrected, went off the right side of the road, into the emergency lane, and then back off the left side of the road. The car then overturned several times, hit several trees, and caught fire. The driver of the car was killed in the accident.

Investigators are still working on the accident to determine what caused the car to leave the roadway.
