Woman Dead, Four Injured In Wreck With State Trooper

   At least one woman is dead and four others injured after a minivan crashed into a state trooper's patrol car late Wednesday night in Lancaster County, S.C.

   Laxiben Patel, 81, died following the accident, which occurred about 11:30 p.m. at the intersection of North Corner Rd. and Hwy.21 south of Andrew Jackson State Park. The trooper involved, LCpl. E. F. Kennington, may have been responding to another accident reported at Millstone Branch Rd. and Steel Hill Rd. about 11:15 p.m., said one official at the scene.

   The highway patrol has not said whether the trooper had his lights or siren on, or who was responsible.

   Two medical helicopters and multiple ambulances were called to the scene. Kennington and three others in the minivan were transported to local hospitals.

   Witnesses nearby said the crash sounded like an explosion.
