Woman charged in fatal I-95 crash

A Barwell woman has been charged in an early Saturday morning wreck that killed an infant and injured 7 people on Interstate 95, just north of Santee, South Carolina.

Tonya Sue Thornton, 33, was driving her sports utility vehicle when she sideswiped another SUV. Both vehicles were knocked into the guardrails of the I-95 bridge. A truck then hit both of the SUVs.

An infant was thrown from one of the vehicles off the bridge into Lake Marion. The infant girl's name has not yet been released. She died Sunday afternoon at Palmetto Health Richland Hospital in Columbia. Police say she was not restrained at the time of the accident.

Thornton faces charges of driving under the influence involving death. She is currently being treated for injuries at the Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg.
