Walmart recalls kids' jewelry over toxic metal

Retail giant Walmart has pulled a line of children's jewelry from its shelves purported to be contaminated with the toxic metal cadmium.

The retailer has taken a Miley Cyrus line of make-it-yourself charm bracelets and necklaces down from its shelves this week after the Associated Press reported that Walmart knew about the toxicity levels of the jewlery since February.

In April, Walmart said that  they were testing all incoming products for toxic heavy metals, but not products already on shelves, attesting that it would be "too difficult." Walmart itself has not specified what kind of jewelry, but said they were pulling Chinese-manufactured jewelry from their junior's department.

Cadmium is a toxic heavy metal that can harm brain development, cause kidney disease, and increase one's risk of developing lung cancer. Parents are encouraged to take cheap jewelry away from children to decrease exposure.
