Starbucks Sued for Faulty Coffee Lid

Posted on May 22, 2017

In 2014, a woman was at her local Starbucks where she ordered a venti sized hot coffee.

She picked up her coffee at the drive-thru and shortly after sustained first and second-degree burns to her mid-section when the lid popped off the cup of coffee.

A Starbucks representative testified in a recent trial that the company receives around 80 complaints per month about faulty coffee lids. This includes cups leaking or lids popping off.

A jury noted her personal injury from the 190-degree coffee and awarded her $15,000 for her medical bills. In addition to the medical damages, the jury awarded her $85,000 for her pain and disfigurement caused by the negligence of Starbucks.

When a company knows about a defect in their equipment or product, but fails to correct it, they may become liable for their negligence in the event someone is hurt.

If you are seriously injured in an accident, whether it be a car accident, slip and fall, or other negligence of another, you may need legal help to get your medical bills paid.
