3 Stem Cell Researchers Awarded $500K Prize
Mar 23, 2011Three stem cell researchers were awarded the Albany Medical Center Prize in Medicine and Biomedical Research for their work in human stem cells. The winners were Elaine Fuchs, Rockefeller University in New York City; James A. Thomson, Morgridge Institute for Research and the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health; and Shinya Yamanaka, Kyoto University in Japan and Gladstone Institute of Cardiovascular Disease in San Francisco. These three will share the $500K prize which is largest award in medicine and science in the United States.
James Barba, President and CEO of the Albany Medical Center, said the discoveries made will help researchers develop new treatments for diseases like diabetes, Parkinson's, spinal cord injury, and cancer. In a statement, Barba said: "The solutions to these debilitating diseases and many, many others that plague humans might very well be found through the science of stem cells."
Stem cells are unique because of their versatility. These cells can transform into any cell in the human body. Yamanaka and Thomson are credited with discovering how to genetically reprogram adult human cells back to an embryonic state. This was reported as a major scientific breakthrough in 2007, and the cell lines, which are now used in laboratories worldwide, speed up stem cell research by offering the alternative to actual embryonic stem cells.
Fuch's, the third winner, has focused her work on the biology of stem cells. She has worked in understand how stem cells make skin and how and how they repair wounds. These discoveries and advances have led her laboratory to the genetic bases of human skin disorders, including cancers. -
Maryland woman awarded damages for spinal cord injury
May 19, 2010
A woman who was left a paraplegic following a surgery for blocked arteries was awarded $3.5 million in damages.
The Maryland woman, Victoria Little, suffered severe blood loss and injury to her spinal cord, leaving her unable to walk during a surgery in 2007.
Little's lawyers claim that the surgeons, Dr. Roger E. Schneider and Dr. Mark D. Gonze used an improper grafting technique to clear Little's arteries. The suit was filed against both the surgeons and their business, Vascular Surgery Associates.
The jury awarded Little $1.3 million in noneconomic damages, $2 million for future medical bills and over $200,000 for past medical bills. -
District liable for bicyclist's spinal injuries
May 11, 2010The Hartford Metropolitan District Commission in the state of Connecticut was found responsible for injuries suffered by former children's book illustrator. A Superior Court jury awarded Maribeth Blonski, 43, $2.9 million for her injuries.
Blonski was biking on a trail in the West Hartford Reservoir area in 2002 when she hit an improperly placed steel gate across the path, causing her to break four vertebrae in her neck.
The Metropolitan District Commission had placed the gate to block motor vehicle access to the reservoir.
At the time of the accident, Blonski was the host of a local-access television show about mountain biking and worked as an illustrator. She now works the front desk of a health club.
The case took eight years to resolve because there was a dispute about whether or not the Metropolitan District Commission was immune from responsibility.
Blonski had tried earlier to settle the case out of court for less than the jury awarded, but the Metropolitan District Commission had refused. -
Woman awarded damages for spinal cord injuries
May 11, 2010A Palm Beach jury has awarded a Florida woman $36.6 million for a botched steroid injection that left her with spinal injuries and a disfigured right arm.
Kathleen Ramey, 52, sought treatment from Dr. Andrew Weiss in 2000 after suffering injuries in a car accident. To help her manage her pain, he had administered steroid injections. One injection left Ramey with a four-inch hole in her spinal cord that left her with a degenerative condition causing her to be in constant pain.
Her attorney attested that her condition has worsened over time and Ramey is only able to leave the house for doctor's visits and has lost her quality of life.
Weiss was not present during the trial as he is serving 12 year prison sentence for illegally distributing oxycodone. His medical license has been revoked.
The jury ordered Weiss to pay $23.6 million to Ramey and $13 million to her husband.
