Spartanburg woman arrested at scene of fatal accident

Kerry Barry Vanwinkle, 46, of Spartanburg, was charged with driving under the influence and child endangerment at 6 pm on Saturday at Grande Dunes Boulevard and North Kings Highway.

 

Officers had blocked off Grand Dunes Boulevard for a crash an hour earlier that killed Shane Terreberry, 25, of Myrtle Beach, when an SUV struck Terreberry's truck as he tried to cross the highway.

 

An officer who was directing traffic at the scene of the accident, said Vanwinkle's SUV was speeding toward the scene and the driver did not appear to see the officer waving at her to stop. When she recognized an officer was blocking the road, she drove off the side of the road to avoid hitting him. The officer says she appeared to be intoxicated when he stopped to question her about not slowing down when approaching the accident scene.

 

Vanwinkle's breathalyzer result was 0.21 when she was tested at the Myrtle Beach Police Department. Her 9-year-old son, who had been with her in the vehicle, was released to the custody of another family member.
