Richland County Deputy Involved in Accident That Left 1 Person Dead

A fatal collision invovling a Richland County Deputy and another vehicle occured on Highway 76/378 near Shaw Air Force Base Thursday morning. The accident happened at 10:19 a.m. at the intersection of Highway 76/378 and Highway 441 and involved an SUV and a RCSD patrol car. The driver of the SUV, 68-year-old Philip Hawkins, died on impact at the scene of the crash. The Sherrif's deputy was airlifted to the hospital.
According to the Richland County Sherrif's office, the deputy lives in Sumter County and was on his way to work at the time of the accident.
An investigation is ongoing into the events that led to the accident.
