Pickens Woman Dead After Single Car Accident

A Pickens woman was killed in a single car accident Saturday night around 9 P.M. after the driver of the car lost control, overcorrected, and drove off the opposite side of the road. Cynthia Marie Darty Harrington, 42, died at the scene of the accident.
The driver of the 1993 vehicle, Steven Keith Whitmire, 20, lost control of the car while traveling west on Gravley Road in Pickens. According to Lance Cpl. Scot Edgeworth of the S.C. Highway Patrol, Whitmire ran off the side of the road, overcorrected, drove off the opposite side of the road, went down an embankment, and caused the car to overturn.
Whitmire is charged with felony driving under the influence resulting in death, leaving the scene of a collision that resulted in death, and driving under suspension. Whitmire was not wearing a seatbelt and was uninjured in the accident. A passenger in the front seat of the truck was not wearing a seatbelt and was taken by ambulance to Greenville Hospital System. Two other passengers in the truck were also not wearing seatbelts but were uninjured.
Harrington was riding in the bed of the pickup truck and was thrown from the vehicle during the accident. Another passenger, also riding in the bed of the pickup was thrown from the vehicle but was uninjured.
The state patrol continues to investigate the accident.
