Saftey Group Urging Ignition Interlocks for all DUI Offenders
Mar 07, 2012
A national road safety group is urging lawmakers and decision makers to equip vehicles of DUI offenders with ignition interlock devices which would prevent the cars from starting if it detects alcohol in the driver. The debate is currently over whether to put the devices in cars of anyone convicted of a DUI or only those that are repeat offenders or hard core drunk drivers. Those deemed "hard-core" are those that had a blood-alcohol content of 0.15% or higher.
A study done in Washington showed that if the device was installed in cars of first time offenders reduced the likelihood that those drivers would become repeat offenders. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety said that the devices reduced repeat offenders by 11-12% if installed after the first offense. Right now, only 15 states have a law in place requiring the device with 7 more considering the law.
The interlock device is a breath testing device in which a driver blows into a tube before being able to start the vehicle. If the blood-alcohol content exceeds the legal limit, then the car will not start. Many other groups such as Mothers Against Drunk Driving also support the devices. The device proves that it saves lives as well as keeping repeat offenders out from behind the wheel.
