Passenger Dies after Car Hits Ditch and then a Building

One man is dead after the car he was riding in struck a ditch and then hit a building in Lexington County. The accident happened on Cross Road which is eight miles east of Lexington. Authorities say that Christopher Shawn Mitchell, 22, and another person were driving a 1998 Chevy Monte Carlo west on Cross Road at a high rate of speed when the driver failed to stop at the intersection of Platt Springs Road. The car hit a ditch and then collided with a building.

Mitchell was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, and the coronor said he was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the car. The cause of death was determined to be multiple head and body trauma. The driver was also not wearing a seatbelt and was also ejected from the car. He was taken to Palmetto Health Richland with serious injuries.

The highway patrol's MAIT team is continuing to investigate the accident.
