One Dead After Accident on I-26 in Berkeley County Thursday

An early morning accident on I-26 in Berkeley County claimed the life of one person and caused traffic delays for hours. The accident happened around mile marker 197 when a 1997 Ford Crown Victoria that was traveling west ran off the right side of the road and struck several trees. The driver of the car was transported to MUSC and the passenger in the car, Judy Pye Godbee, was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to reports, Godbee leaned over to tell the driver something and unintentionally grabbed the steering wheel which caused the car to go off the road. Godbee was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.
The accident remains under investigation by the SC Highway Patrol and the Berkeley County Coronor's Office.
