Man Kills 1 After Falling Asleep at the Wheel

A Charleston man is facing charges after the S.C. Highway Patrol says that he fell asleep at the wheel while driving on I-95 in Jasper County. 20-year-old Ludvin Andrez-Gonzalez fell asleep while driving a Ford Expedition with 8 other peole in the car. He ran off the right side of the road, overcorrected and caused the SUV to overturn. One passenger, Ernesto Santiz-Lopez died at the hospital from injuries sustained in the accident.
Gonzalez fled the scene of the accident on foot and deputies were able to locate him in the woods a few miles from the accident four hours after the crash. He now faces multiple charges including leaving the scene of an accident involving death, driving too fast for conditions, and driving without a S.C. driver's license.
Police continue to investigate the accident.
