Federal regulators announce recall of children's pool floats, cribs.

Federal regulators announce recall of children's pool floats, cribs.

The Los Angeles Times (7/2, Lade) reported that the Consumer Product Safety Commission is announcing the recall of "inflatable baby floats - shaped like turtles, ducks, power boats and other figures" which are being "voluntarily pulled by distributor Aqua-Leisure Industries after 31 reports of the seats tearing and dropping youngsters into the water." The second action, initiated by the CPSC rather than the manufacturer, recalls more than 400,000 Simplicity drop side cribs for the same hazard that forced one million Simplicity cribs off the market in September 2007: the upgraded plastic hardware still could bend or break, causing the drop side to detach. In the earlier recalls, Simplicity issued hardware replacement kits rather than giving consumers new cribs." The New York Times /AP (7/3, A18) also runs a short piece on the Simplicity crib recall.

The Oregonian  (7/7) reports, "The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced a voluntary recall of about 4 million inflatable baby floats made by Aqua-Leisure Industries because the leg straps in the float seat can tear, causing children to unexpectedly fall into or under the water, posing a risk of drowning." While there "have been 31 reports of float seats tearing" there have not been any injuries reported.

The Philadelphia Inquirer (7/3, Fernandez) reported "government safety regulators said yesterday that parents should discard drop-side Simplicity cribs sold mostly through Wal-Mart and other mass retailers. Ten infant deaths in recent years have been blamed on Simplicity cribs, the government said. 'You should not put your baby to bed tonight in a Simplicity drop-side crib,' said Scott Wolfson, spokesman for the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. But the agency said its warning did not apply to cribs on which parents had installed special hardware. The agency recalled an additional 400,000 Simplicity cribs yesterday, bringing the total number of recalled Simplicity cribs to two million in the last two years. The cribs recalled yesterday were sold at discount stores between January 2005 and last month."
400,000 Simplicity cribs recalled.

The AP  (7/6) reports, "About 400,000 Simplicity drop side cribs are being recalled for posing a suffocation or entrapment hazard." The CPSC alleges that "the crib's hardware can break or deform, allowing the drop side to detach" which "creates a gap between the mattress and the side of the crib, where a small child could be trapped or suffocated." Four million baby floats recalled.
