Fatal Motorcycle Accident on Highway 17 Bypass

A motorcycle accident at the intersection of Glenns Bay Road and Highway 17 Bypass Thursday afternoon claimed the life of one person. The accident happened just before 1 p.m. when the motorcyclist was traveling southbound on 17 Bypass and was attempting to make a left hand turn when he was struck by an SUV traveling north. The motorcyclist died as a result of the accident. He was identified as 72-year-old Jerry Smith. Smith was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

Traffic on 17 Bypass was backed up for quite a while as crews worked to clear the scene. The accident remains under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol. No charges have been filed so far in the case.
