Concern over radiation exposure prompts efforts to curb CT scan use

Federal regulators, radiology groups and hospitals are beginning new efforts to prevent unnecessary radiation exposure from CT scans. The Food and Drug Administration is in the process of implementing new safety requirements for manufactures of the devices. The agency will also encourage physicians to consider whether or not diagnostic benefits from using the scanning devices outweigh the risk of radiation exposure before prescribing a CT scan for a patient.

The efforts focus on lessoning exposure to radiation for adults, but children are still at a higher risk of developing cancer, mostly due to their size. The Society for Pediatric Radiology encourages using smaller amounts of radiation while scanning or substituting for an ultrasound instead.
