Boaters Hurt After Explosion at Tega Cay Marina
Jul 14, 2011
Four people were seriously injured Wednesday afternoon at the Tega Cay marina after a boat exploded after refueling. Authorties say that a total of six people were onboard the 37-foot cabin crusier when it pulled away from the dock after refueling. It was at that time that the boat exploded.Witnesses say that two adults and two boys jumped from the boat and were pulled from the water by onlookers at the marina. One was airlifted and three were taken via ambulance to Carolinas Medical Center. Two of those injured in the accident were then sent to the burn unit at UNC Chapel Hill.
Five other boats at the marina were damaged as a result of the explosion and authorities say they are still unclear as to what caused the explosion. A complete investigation will be done as soon as the boat can be pulled out of the marina.
Officals warn that boaters should properly vent after refueling by using the blower to sift gas away from the engine compartment and should then make sure they don't smell any gas fumes before starting the engine. Many times, boaters skip this step and it can lead to fires.

Man Drowns in Murrells Inlet Early Sunday
Jul 05, 2011
The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources has identified the body of George Nathan Kennerly, 46, after he apparently drowned early Sunday morning in Murrells Inlet. His body was found in the water near Cedar Hill resting against some marsh grass.A passing boater noticed Kennerly's empty boat and called officials. Though his body was found 1/2 mile from a private boat landing, there was no indication of injury. Officials did find fishing equipment and a small quantity of alcohol on the boat, but said that alcohol didn't appear to be a factor in his death. An autopsy will be performed in order to determine the cause of death.

Teen Dies After Hitting Head on Wakeboard
Jun 29, 2011
A Rock Hill teenager has died after hitting his head in a wakeboarding accident over the weekend. The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources said that John Clinton, 19, was wakeboarding in the Dutchman Creek portion of Lake Wateree on Sunday when the accident happened. Clinton fell while wakeboarding and hit his head on the board. Clinton had previously hit his head in another boating accident earlier last week but did not seek treatment for that injury. After hitting his head Sunday, he climbed back on the boat and then became unresponsive. A medical helicopter picked up Clinton and flew him to a nearby hospital where he later died. The Coroner's office is working to determine whether or not the previous head injury contributed to the cause of death Sunday.

Drunk Boating Crack Down Underway Across South Carolina
Jun 28, 2011
The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and the Coast Guard are on the look-out this summer for drunk boaters. They are anticipating the upcoming 4th of July weekend will be a busy one on Horry County's waterways. Cary Robinson with the SC DNR states that it will be zero tolerance. Anyone who is screened and found to be under the influence will be charged accordingly. The Coast Guard recently announced a new initiative called "Operation Dry Water" as a national effort to reduce boating under the influence as well as the number of alcohol-related deaths and accidents. The key to safe boating is to be alert and use common courtesy. The SC DNR has stated that in order to avoid a ticket, boaters must make sure they follow all the rules and regulations. Those arrested for boating under the influence can face a $475 fine and may lost boating privlages for 180 days.
Always practice safe boating while enjoying the water. Many accidents and injuries can be prevented by using caution and staying sober.
