6th Grader in Columbia Hit by Car and Dies

An 11-year-old boy was struck and killed Tuesday afternoon in Columbia while he was crossing the street after being let out of school. According to troopers, Towanda Sumter, 35, was driving north on Decker Blvd. when she hit Devonte Owens as he crossed the street. Owens was taken to Palmetto Health Richland where he died Wednesday morning from injuries sustained in the accident.

Officals say there was no crossing guard where Owens was because it was just outside of the school zone. The driver of the car was not injured and no charges have been filed yet in the accident. It is still under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
