11 Year Old Boy Killed In ATV Accident

An 11-year-old boy was killed Saturday afternoon after an accident while riding an ATV. Kyle Kelly, 11, was operating the ATV going east near the intersection of Leslie Branham Road and Green Hill Road in Kershaw County around 2:30 p.m. when he went off the right side of the road, hit an embankment, and overturned. The crashed killed Kelly and authorities determined he was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

The accident happened less than a week before Chandler's Law will take effect. Chandler's Law requires, among other things, that children under the age of 15 complete a safety training course and also wear a helmet and protective eyewear while operating an ATV. This law takes effect July 1, 2011.

The ATV accident remains under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
