If Approved for Social Security Disability -- What are the Benefits?

If you are approved for disability, your first Social Security Disability Benefits will be paid for the 6th full month following the date your disability began.

Your first check will catch you up to date on your disability payments. After that, you will receive a monthly check for your disability benefits.

The amount of your monthly disability benefit is based on your average lifetime earnings. The Social Security statement that you receive each year displays your lifetime earnings and provides an estimate of your disability benefit. It also includes estimates of your Retirement and Survivor's Benefits that you or your family may be eligible to receive in the future.

You can request an estimate of your Disability statement by calling 1-800-772-1213. If you are already a receiving benefits, you can also find out about more information and services by visiting Social Security online. Frequently asked questions about receiving benefits can be answered here.

An additional benefit of Social Security Disability is Medicare. Medicare coverage automatically begins after you have received disability benefits for two years. Medicare is our nation's health insurance for people 65 and older, but people who are under 65 who have a disability also qualify for Medicare.
