National Transportation Safety Board Requests National Cell Phone Ban for All Commercial Drivers

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has called for a ban on the use of cell phones by truckers, except for emergency situations in order to help reduce trucking accidents. The recommendation for a nationwide ban was one of 15 new safety proposals recently issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the Federal Highway Administration, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration(FMCSA), and various other state agencies across the US.

Studies indicate that changes in a driver's ability to maintain control of a vehicle result when cognitive abilities are diverted to cell phone use. Based on this investigation, the NTSB has called ont he FMCSA as well as each state to prohibit the use of both handheld and hands-free cell phones while operating commerical trucks.
