MLB Now Requires Brain Injury Specialist for Each Club
In an effort to reduce the effects of mild traumatic brain injuries, Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association have instituted new concussion protocols requiring each club to have a traumatic brain injury specialist located in the home city of the team.This policy was created with the help of a committee of concussion experts which will oversee how soon the players and umpires effected by a concussion can return to play. This policy goes into effect on Opening day. It also includes the creation of a 7-day disabled list for players with concussions. This is to prevent players from returning to the game too soon. Additionally, the policy calls for a mandatory baseline neuropsychological test for players and umpires during spring training.
This policy will help protect players and umpires from additional damage after receiving a concussion.
