Investigation Into Defect of Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey OEM Jacks

According to a statement from the National Highway Traffic Safety Adminstration, an investigation has been opened into 205,661 2004-2005 Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey minivans after 1 death and 3 injuries occured in relation to the service jack.

The NHTSA says the complaints allege that the jack failed, and allowed the vehicle to fall on top of the person working under the car. In the failures reported, the jacks apparently failed at the slotted hinge joints which seperate under the load of the vehicle.

The NHTSA does not recommend for the OEM jacks in the minivans to be used for anything other than changing a tire.
