Home Fires from Dehumidifier Prompt Recall Re-announcement

LG Electronics, in cooperation with the Consumer Product Safety Commission has reannounced a recall of Goldstar and Comfort-Aire dehumidifiers. The recall includes about 98,000 dehumidifiers that pose a serious fire and burn hazard. The faulty products are also believed to be respobsible for over $1 million in property damage.

According to the reports the power connector for the dehumidifiers compressor can short circuit, which can pose a fire and burn hazard to consumers and/or their property. The products were first recalled in December of 2009 following 11 incidents, with 4 significant fires. Since that time, the company has received 16 more reports of arcing, smoke and fire associated with the products, including 9 significant fires.

Because of the severity of the risks, the CPSC and LG have become concerned with the lack of consumer response and want to urge people to check their dehumidifiers to see if they are included in the recall. There is a free repair for the products to correct the problem. Consumers are urged to check the model and serial number and cross reference the list posted on the CPSC's website. The products were sold at The Home Depot, WalMart, Ace Hardware, and other retailers from January 2007 - June 2008.
